llms.txt, explained

llms.txt is a plain markdown file at the root of your domain that points assistants at the pages worth reading. It is a proposal, not a standard — worth doing, easy to overrate.

What llms.txt is

A single file at /llms.txt holding a heading, a one-line description of your site and a curated list of links with short notes. The idea is to hand a model the short version of your site instead of your entire navigation.

What belongs in the file

Documentation, pricing, the pages that define your product, and anything you would send to a new customer. Leave out marketing pages that repeat each other, and anything you would not want quoted verbatim.

What it does not do

It does not force a model to read you, it does not rank you, and it does not replace robots.txt or structured data. No major assistant guarantees today that it uses the file.

Publishing and keeping it current

Serve it as plain text markdown at the root, link it from your footer or sitemap, and regenerate it whenever your docs change. A stale llms.txt is worse than none: it points models at pages you deleted.
